Maureen Bernice “Bernie” Romero – Our beloved Bernie died peacefully on Thursday, August 14, 2003, surrounded by family and friends. Bernie is survived by her daughter, Michelle Ortiz; parents Gene H. and Minerva Romero, and five siblings; Evelyn “Eve” Romero and husband Jon Mustonene; Gary Romero and wife JoAnn; Gene F. Romero; Claire Romero and husband David Bomse; and Larry Romero and wife Irma Chavez. She was also a loving aunt to four nieces; Misa, Andrea, Marisol and Sofia, and four nephews; Alex, Christopher, Aaron and Gene. Bernie will also be sorely missed by her uncle and aunts, Boleslo and Dora Romero, Soveida Gonzales, and Helen Crows, as well as numerous cousins. Bernie was born in Albuquerque on July 22, 1947. After graduating from Valley High School in 1965, she moved to Santa Fe where she worked for the state. Back in Albuquerque, Bernie pursued a career in the food industry as a caterer, restaurant manager, and cook. Gourmet cooking was top amongst her many passions and through much of her life Bernie created sumptuous feasts for friends and family. We miss our dear Bernie but her love of music, antiques, floral design, good literature, and vintage films will always live in our hearts. Funeral services are pending. Direct cremation has taken place in Albuquerque. The family expresses their gratitude to the medical staff of the Albuquerque Regional Medical Center and Vista Care who provided medical and hospice care for Bernie during the last few weeks of her life.
